My natural DIY postpartum spray and cooling pads are LIFE-SAVERS during the postpartum period! I learned many things to do differently during postpartum, but this is one thing I did do right years ago!
Both of these recipes are all-natural and work so effectively to relieve your perineum and hemorrhoid pain throughout your healing during postpartum.
Ingredients for Natural Postpartum Spray
- 3.4 oz spray bottle (The gold and frosted glass fine mist bottles I used)
- 2 Tbs Forever Pure’s witch hazel
- 2 Tbs organic aloe vera gel
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
- 5 drops tea tree essential oil
- 2-3 Tbs of filtered water
Organic Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe vera speeds up wound healing by improving blood circulation and preventing cell death around a wound.
Aloe vera also contains properties that are harmful to certain types of bacteria and fungi, which is beneficial for preventing infection.
Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender essential oil has antiseptic and healing properties making it a useful ingredient in both the postpartum spray and cooling pads recipe to help heal and soothe your perineum after birth!
Tea Tree Essential Oil
Tea tree oil has powerful antibacterial and anti-fungal properties making it another useful ingredient in these recipes to prevent infections.
Witch Hazel
Witch hazel is a plant medicine that helps repair broken skin, fight bacteria, reduce swelling, pain, bruising, plus relieve itching and inflammation.
I highly recommend using Forever Pure’s alcohol-free witch hazel. This brand has been the most effective for me due to its excellent quality compared to other brands I have tried. It even contains aloe vera as well!
A common concern is if witch hazel stings and it really does not sting at all! It honestly doesn’t feel very different than applying water to your skin, and it also doesn’t have a strong smell either!
Directions
- Combine the witch hazel, water, and aloe vera gel into the glass bottle.
- Add lavender and tea tree oil.
- Shake well and spray on perineum multiple times every day!
I applied my postpartum spray after every time I washed with water first.
For example, after going to the bathroom and using a peri bottle, showering, or taking a bath!
Organic Cooling Pad Ingredients
- Organic overnight pads
- Forever Pure’s witch hazel
- Organic aloe vera gel
- Lavender essential oil
- Tea tree essential oil
I have become a firm believer in using all organic pads and tampons. I believe they make a positive difference when switching from conventional women’s health products to organic and all-natural. Check out my post on Why organic tampons and pads are so crucial for your health.
Organic pads are more comfortable, breathable, and safe for your health. Plus, they’re free of chemical additives, like chlorine, bleach, and pesticides!
Conventional pads (and tampons) contain dioxins, which are a by-product of the chlorine bleaching process used to make cotton look very white and clean. Dioxins are known to cause cancer, so it’s important to avoid conventional women’s hygiene products.
Directions
- Partially unwrap a few of your organic pads at one time. Generously spread the organic aloe vera gel, covering the entire pad. (Don’t over-saturate the pad so that it can still absorb postpartum bleeding)
- Pour about 1-2 teaspoons of witch hazel vertically down the center of each pad.
- Add a few drops of lavender oil and a few drops of tea tree oil.
- Fold the pads back up and put them into a gallon-sized zip-lock bag and put them in the freezer.
- After a couple of hours, you can pull one pad out of the freezer for each use and wait 3 minutes for the pad to thaw before using it.
Using padsicles feels fantastic after giving birth to your baby. Whether you may have torn a bit or not, your perineum is sore and swollen after birth and using these padsicles is a fantastic way to nurture and relieve yourself during postpartum.
How I Use Them Together:
- Before going to the bathroom I grab a new padsicle from my freezer
- After using the bathroom I use my peri bottle to clean myself
- Next I spray spray myself with the postpartum spray
- Then apply my new cooling and healing padsicle to my underwear then I’m good to go!
I hope you enjoy these natural postpartum recipes mama!
And remember, you got this! You are encouraged, educated, and empowered.♡
Donate menstrual hygiene products
Menstrual hygiene products are a basic need for all women and should be regarded as a fundamental right.
Lack of access and the cost of buying menstrual hygiene products can add to the list of struggles due to menstrual bleeding.
“Most women in society can identify with having to ‘make do’ with toilet paper or tissue for a few hours when they are caught off guard by the start of their menstrual flow or run out of products. But, for the women who participated in this needs assessment, they are often forced to ‘make do’ all day, for their entire cycle, and often every month”- Anne Kuhlmann, Ph.D.
Here is the link to the assessment/research study mentioned above
In all of my posts where I talk about women’s hygiene products I will be leaving links to sites where you will have the ability to donate products or cash to help others in need of products if you have the ability and interest to.
Period poverty is real. And having the ability to purchase organic pads and tampons is fortunate. Check out my post on why I choose to use organic pads and tampons.
I was one of the women who had to ‘make do’ for months, and it’s important to me to support and help women in all ways possible!
We’re in this together!
