What Are Mood Swings?

Mood swings are rapid changes in emotions with a decreased ability to explain why you feel a certain way.
Mood swings can be caused by your normal hormonal changes. In fact, hormone changes are women’s most common cause of mood swings, especially for those going through puberty, PMS, pregnancy, postpartum, or menopause.
However, mood swings may also be caused by stress. Stress is one of the most significant triggers for mood swings.
Mood Swings in Pregnancy
Mood swings in pregnancy are common due to a multitude of factors. The first factor most people recognize is rapid hormone shifts during pregnancy, particularly regarding estrogen and progesterone.
Other components affecting your mood swings in pregnancy can be due to prenatal fatigue, discomfort, and normal worries about upcoming life changes.

What Can Help Your Mood Swings?
As you read these tips and techniques for mood swings, you will be able to identify what is causing your mood swings and what can help.
1. Take a Break

If you notice you’re becoming irritable, short-tempered, or sad, try to find your own quiet space. (Stepping outside might be a good option). Take some deep breaths, listen to music, or lay down until you feel better. Regardless of what you do, become still, listen, and feel.
Ask yourself:
Did you discover what you currently need to help you?
What feelings are arising?
If you have a toddler, communicate your feelings before taking a break. You will help them become fantastic at communicating their feelings one day by always communicating hard feelings. Also, apologize if you accidentally yelled, snapped, etc., at your little one. You’re the first person they will learn this skill from, giving them more opportunity to understand, give you love, and learn conscious forgiveness.
The good news is that mood swings caused by stress can go away as quickly as they come with the right techniques or a simple mindset change!
2. Let Go
If overwhelm triggers your mood swings, ask yourself if there’s anything you can let go of. It’s crucial to recognize which things buzzing in your brain are achievable at that moment or even day! When something isn’t realistic and causes you to be overwhelmed, write it in your notes and let it go.
For me, this is the most common cause of mood swings, and figuring out how to let go of an idea in my head is the most effective way to halt my mood swings.
3. Eat Something If Needed

Low blood sugar can also influence your feelings.
Ask yourself:
“Am I …prioritizing blood sugar stability with every meal?”
“Am I eating often enough?”
“Is my body getting the food it needs?”
Then consider grabbing a high-protein snack.

5. Set Boundaries
If you’re struggling with frequent mood swings, try to figure out when you struggle the most. Ask yourself if there’s unattainable pressure or an unrealistic goal you’ve put on yourself, causing your mood swings. Or is it when you’re rushing or got poor sleep?
While you’re figuring things out, again, communicate with your littles and others around you about how you’re feeling and ask for their patience and understanding while you try to nurture yourself.
6. Prepare for the Storm

If you mostly deal with hormonal mood swings, keep track of your period on an app or calendar. This will help remind you when to switch your brain to a state of more rest and calm energy.
To help get into a more calm and resting state, treat yourself to a spa night with an Epsom salt bath, sip chamomile tea, or lay down and watch tv instead of working or cleaning this time!
