We all know how necessary it is to find the ultimate prenatal vitamin for you, and DHA is one part of a prenatal that you should definitely be looking for. But why is DHA crucial to have in your prenatal vitamin?
Also, remember that the brand really doesn’t matter. It’s all about what the prenatal vitamin contains.
What is DHA?
DHA is an omega-3 essential fatty acid. It’s so important because it’s the building block involved in your baby’s growth and development!
It supports the brain, eye, and nervous system development of the baby during pregnancy.
Prenatal vitamins with adequate DHA have also been shown to ensure a healthy birth weight, decrease pre-term birth chances, and even support the mama’s mood during pregnancy and early postpartum!
How Much Do You Need During Pregnancy?
You should have a minimum of 200 mg daily before, during, and after pregnancy.
How Can You Get More DHA in Your Diet?

Seafood sources that are safe during pregnancy:
- salmon
- herring
- sardines
- rainbow trout
- oysters
- sea bass
- shrimp
- lobster
- And some brands of eggs may be fortified with EPA and DHA as well
To meet the recommended intake of DHA and EPA while minimizing your mercury exposure, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends consuming only 8 to 12 ounces of seafood per week.
Make sure to be aware of the off-limit foods and seafood during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to high mercury levels, such as king mackerel, shark, swordfish, and tilefish.
My Prenatal & Vitamin Recommendations
I use this prenatal supplement daily with 200 mg of DHA. I also take this omega-3-6-9 supplement daily to fulfill all of my essential fatty acid needs!
