Dr. Rachel Reed is a Qualified Midwife in the UK and Australia. Reclaiming Childbirth as a Rite of Passage is an empowering childbirth book that I recommend to pregnant women and even young women as well.
This book is fantastic for educating young women because Dr. Reed goes through the history of childbirth and how women have been treated in general over time, cultures, and religions. Learning this history relates to more than just birth. It starts with the first menstrual cycle, then Dr. Reed explains how the way we’re treated regarding our menstrual cycle as young adults seeps into our childbirth experiences and emergence into motherhood. As a woman listening to Dr. Rachel Reed’s knowledge, it felt like gaps in my innate wisdom were being filled.
We have these powerful experiences as women, and how we are treated and go about our health at these times continues to follow us through menopause.
For expecting mothers, I always recommend they learn about the way childbirth came into the hospital setting, why it happened, and what it looked like. And I would love for them to hear from others and myself about the reality of relying on the maternity care system, and this is one of the books I recommend to acquire this knowledge.
Who Is This ChildBirth Book For?
Mothers and birth workers will also value hearing all of the physiological facts about each stage of childbirth in this book. Learning and hearing how perfectly birth works when it’s physiological helps women build trust in themselves which I believe is often subconsciously lost in these Western societies.
An inspirational and empowering read that allows you to see the whole picture of childbirth, what it means, and the misconceptions that have been around in different ways for centuries. I now understand why women have always been drawn to herbs and natural remedies, and I am grateful for what Dr. Reed has taught me about herstory because history didn’t give us the full picture that all women deserve to know.
