My dairy-free, matcha green tea frappe recipe is a delicious, sweet, and healthy beverage! I drink one almost every single day as my afternoon pick-me-up.
Luckily this drink is even better than just a tasty, healthy treat with some caffeine.

Matcha is packed with benefits for your health. Some uses like weight loss can be especially noticeable if you drink it a few times a week. (Keep reading to see my favorite benefits of matcha green tea)
And suppose you are like me and would instead save your time and extra money. In that case, this is a healthier alternative to the matcha green tea frappe from Starbucks that you can make right in your home!
What is Matcha Green Tea?

Matcha comes from the same plant as other green teas but is grown and prepared differently. Since the leaves are ground into powder, you consume the whole plant leaf, increasing matcha’s benefits from regular green tea.
Matcha is a Japanese green tea made from powdered dried tea leaves. It has a slightly bitter, earthy taste and a vibrant green color due to the leaves’ high chlorophyll levels.
But some matcha tea powders have a more sweet taste that I have found after the initial earthy flavor. This is because there are two grades of matcha tea: ceremonial grade and culinary grade.

Culinary grade is more bitter in flavor, although it is generally used for matcha lattes, dessert recipes, ice cream, etc. It possesses the intensity of flavor to shine through other ingredients. Still, I recommend the ceremonial grade for this recipe due to personal experience. I found that the culinary grade was less pleasant than the ceremonial.
I highly recommend using this organic ceremonial grade that is made suitable for brewing on its own with very little milk needed.
What Are The Benefits of Matcha Green Tea?
1. High in Antioxidants
Matcha contains a very high amount of catechins, which act as natural antioxidants.
Antioxidants help stabilize free radicals in the body that can damage cells and cause chronic diseases.
Matcha tea contains 137 times more catechins than other green tea making it a powerhouse of antioxidants!
2. Boosts Brain Function
Researchers found that matcha improved attention, reaction time, and memory.
Matcha also contains about 35mg of caffeine in every ½ teaspoon (about 1 gram) of matcha powder.

3. Boosts Immunity
Matcha green tea helps protect the immune system. It limits the invasion and growth of viruses and harmful bacteria in the body.
4. Sustainable Energy
L-theanine is an amino acid found in high matcha concentrations that crosses the blood-brain barrier, promoting relaxation while reducing mental and physical stress.
L-theanine works with caffeine to provide a sustainable, extended boost of energy without caffeine’s usual jittery side effects.

5. May Promote Heart Health
Green tea has been shown to decrease “bad” cholesterol: LDL (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol) and prevent LDL cholesterol oxidation.
Both factors may lower the risks of developing heart disease.
6. Can Help You Lose Weight
Studies show that green tea may help speed up metabolism and increase fat burned daily.
One small study found that taking green tea extract before working out increased fat burning by 17%
