I started using a yoni egg years ago for mild urinary incontinence and stage 1 pelvic organ prolapse. In this post I’m going over everything you want to know about yoni eggs! Let’s dive into, yoni egg crystal, yoni egg jade, yoni egg purpose, yoni eggs obsidian, and yoni egg how to use.
What’s a Yoni Egg Crystal?
Yoni is a Sanskrit word meaning space, source, or womb.
Sanskrit is the ancient language of Hinduism.
Yoni eggs can be made of various kinds of stones including jade, quartz, obsidian, and more!
How Yoni Eggs Work

Similarly to lifting a weight with your arm and then putting your arm down and relaxing it, this is exactly how yoni eggs work.
Now, should you go around all day carrying a weight hanging down from your arm? No, this would damage your tendons and ligaments and not really benefit your arm muscles.
Therefore, yoni eggs should not be used by carrying it around all day, either.
Where Did Yoni Eggs Originate?
Yoni eggs are thought to be of Chinese origin, however, there is no historical evidence to confirm this claim.
When Were Yoni Eggs Invented?
Some sources say that yoni eggs were invented around 5,000 years ago in China.
Others say that “the tradition of exercising the pelvic and vaginal floor muscles with polished stone eggs has been around for over two thousand years.” [1]
What Does a Yoni Eggs Do?

Sources from OB-GYNs and the WHO state that there is no evidence to support benefits of yoni eggs and they believe that it’s just another marketing product to target women and make even more money from them.
While I agree that using marketing that these eggs “balance your menstrual cycle” and “soothe PMS” is far-fetched. When using these eggs correctly, they’re simply a weight for your pelvic floor muscles.
Similarly to lifting a weight with your arm and then putting your arm down and relaxing it, this is exactly how yoni eggs work.
Strengthening your pelvic floor muscles can help: [2]
- Reverse pelvic floor prolapse
- Reduce the risk of pelvic organ prolapse
- In women, this may be felt as a bulge in the vagina or a feeling of heaviness, discomfort, pulling, dragging or dropping
- Relieve or prevent urinary incontinence
- Help you achieve orgasms, which, therefore, could make you more interested and pleased with sex, thus, increasing your libido
- Improve recovery from childbirth or gynecologic surgery
- Increase social confidence and quality of life
Yoni eggs are another way that can help you become intimate with yourself and learn more about your body. Noteworthy, medicine and health care needs to stop overlooking a person’s mind and body connection and how that can certainly improve physical and mental health, including self-confidence.
What is the Pelvic Floor?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles located in your pelvis. These muscles stretch like a hammock from the pubic bone (at the front) to the coccyx/tail-bone (at the back) and support your bladder, uterus, and bowel.
The pelvic floor muscles also maintain bladder and bowel control and play a crucial role in sexual sensation and function.
How I Use Yoni Egg Crystals
With my yoni eggs I’ll essentially do gentle pelvic floor exercises while also doing kegels (the right way).
How to do kegels the right way:
- First make sure your bladder is empty, then sit or lie down
- If this is your first time, push with your pelvic floor like you’re peeing for a second. Those are the muscles you’re going activate.
- Pull those muscles up, imagining your picking up a pen and using a string through your vagina to pull it all the way up for about 10 seconds.
- Since the pelvic floor also supports your bowels, on your next kegel, try to add in squeezing your anus closed without clenching your buttocks. Doing these together are how to do a kegel correctly!
- If you can, exhale while you activate the kegel for 10 seconds. Then, inhale for 10 seconds as you release all of your pelvic floor muscles as much as possible.
You might find it difficult to do these longer holds, but your stamina will improve with practice! If the contraction seems to fade when you have not consciously let go, re-engage your muscles again and continue counting.
Keep in mind, releasing the tension from these muscles is just as important as lifting them when you’re activating them, to prevent an excessively tight pelvic floor.

Yes, your pelvic floor can be too tight and more often occurs in strong women like gymnasts, for example.
Still, having a tight or strong pelvic floor is unlikely to affect your ability to have a vaginal birth, but it may lead to pelvic girdle pain.
Further, for the sake of pushing your baby out to be as easy as possible, it’s really helpful to create an optimal balance of strength and the ability to release.
How a Yoni Egg Crystal Helped Me
When you add a yoni egg to your kegel practice, you’re simply making it a weighted exercise. The same way we use dumbbells when exercising our arms.
Moving our muscles without a weight is effective, but adding weight to the lifting and releasing helps you build more muscle much faster.
Therefore, using a yoni egg helped me resolve my mild urinary incontinence and stage 1 pelvic organ prolapse and whenever I stop doing the yoni egg exercises completely, I can tell that my pelvic floor begins to weaken again.
Doing yoni egg exercises once at least every two weeks seems like a sustainable way to keep your pelvic floor strong.
Can Yoni Eggs Cause Infection?
If the yoni egg is not disinfected after each use, the fluids on the egg after its used can grow bacteria. The same way that any fluids, including water when left out can begin to grow bacteria.
To avoid the risk of infection, boil your yoni egg in a pot of water for a few minutes after use, next let it cool and dry, then store it in a clean space, after each use.
Many yoni eggs, such as mine from Gemstone Yoni, come with a high quality bag to hold your yoni egg.
Drilled vs. Non-Drilled Yoni Eggs
If your yoni egg is drilled, this means it has a small hole where you tie a string. This can make it quicker to pull out the yoni egg when you’re done using it.
Without a drilled hole for a string, you can push out your yoni egg with your pelvic floor muscles, while utilizing gravity for it to come out (the same way birth works!).
And if you want to get it out even faster, you can do that while also putting your finger(s) inside your vagina to hook or pull it out.
Are Yoni Eggs Safe?

Yoni eggs are not comparable to douching and when done correctly pose no risk to your pelvic floor, toxic shock syndrome, or bacterial infection.
douching
Yoni eggs are not comparable to douching because when disinfected before use, they don’t comprise of any components that can change your pH. Just like a disinfected menstrual disc or cup does not change your pH.
However, menstrual products containing fragrance, soap, or other components can certainly change your vaginal pH.
Further, tampons can also increase your vaginal pH. This is because tampons absorb everything your vagina, including protective vaginal mucous and good bacteria that help maintain a healthy pH balance.
The healthy pH range of the vagina is 3.8-5, therefore, the vagina has a more acidic pH.
When the pH rises to 5.0+, this often means a case of bacterial vaginosis (BV). And without enough good bacteria to keep fungi in check, it’s possible to get an overgrowth of a fungus called candida, causing a yeast infection.
Yoni eggs do not pose this risk when disinfected after each use.

toxic shock syndrome
Toxic shock syndrome is associated with leaving a tampon in too long. Toxic shock syndrome is essentially a bacterial infection that can lead to serious health issues and even death.
The standard recommendation is to avoid leaving tampons in for longer than 8 hours.
When you avoid leaving your yoni egg in longer than you’re using it for a short exercise, there isn’t a risk of toxic shock syndrome.
bacterial infection
As mentioned above, with proper disinfection, clean hands, and not leaving the egg is after exercise, a bacterial infection should not occur.
My Use and Cleaning Routine with a Yoni Egg Crystal

My yoni egg routine:
- Before I grab my yoni egg outside of its bag, I wash my hands with soap and water, then dry them.
- Then I grab my egg, use some organic coconut oil as a lubricant and insert the widest part of the egg in first with the more narrow end going inside the vagina last.
- I do my exercises, with practicing kegels correctly
- When I’m done, I get into a squatted variation and push the yoni egg out. Sometimes utilizing my finger to scoop it down and out to get it out more quickly. Either practice is great! But, some women really like pushing it out because it further connects them with their pelvic floor and its capability to push effectively, especially using gravity on its side.
- Afterwards, I take the egg with me to fill up a pot of water. Boil the water and use tongs to put the yoni egg inside to disinfect it.
- Once it has been boiled for a few minutes, I take out the yoni egg using clean tongs and set the egg on a piece of paper towel to cool and dry.
- Once the yoni egg is cool and dry, I put it back in its storage bag, until I use it again!
Yoni Egg Different Sizes: Which Yoni Egg Crystal to Start with

There are three sizes of yoni eggs. A small, medium, and a large.
- Large is 3.8×5 cm
- Medium is 3×4 cm
- Small is 2.5×3.5 cm
To my surprise, when i first started utilizing yoni eggs for my pelvic floor, the large is actually the one for beginners!
Gemstone Yoni states that the large is “ideal for beginners that have given birth and/or experience weak pelvic floor conditions.”
The medium yoni egg is “for beginner or intermediate users that are looking to maintain strength and tone vaginal muscles and don’t experience weak pelvic floor conditions.”
Lastly, the small yoni egg is “ideal for advanced users who are able to control the small yoni egg with their pelvic floor muscles“.
Which Crystal for Yoni Egg
Here is the yoni egg set I purchased from Gemstone yoni about 3 years ago.
For the small and medium yoni eggs, I chose bloodstone and for the large yoni egg I chose rose quartz for the crystal.
There are many options for which crystal you would like!
You may make your decision on if you believe in the properties of crystals or you can make a decision based on purely aesthetics!
